Integrated healthcare services and products company, Cardinal Health will introduce powder-free gloves in Hong Kong as a part of its expansion in Asia. US based company which largely deals with traditional wound management products took the decision after it was observed that the traditional powdered gloves are hazardous to patients. The decision of expanding their services was the outcome of the practice of using traditional powdered gloves in many regions even after US Food and Drug Administration had announced in proposed ban on powdered surgical gloves in March.
According to the officials of Cardinal Health there was a tremendous demand for powder-free gloves in Asia. Apart from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, approximately 70% of users are still using powdered gloves. Glove powder can trigger reduced resistance to infection, bacterial environmental contamination, foreign body reaction, delayed wound healing, adhesion formation and granuloma formation. All of these potential consequences can increase the risk of surgical wound infection.
Glove powder increases latex allergy sensitization, potentially eliciting delayed hypersensitivity reactions. Powdered surgical gloves show higher levels of natural rubber latex allergens than gloves that are powder-free. Due to powdered gloves, patients can develop surgical complications such as intestinal obstructions, increased peritoneal or abdominal pain or peritonitis. According to Cardinal Health, single use surgery products are the future for infection control. The disposable option is more economical creates less pollution and ensures safety.
The strongest influence on growth will involve the upgrading and stricter enforcement of infection prevention protocols by hospitals and other health facilities throughout the world. The growth in the BRIC countries, and emerging economies in the Asia Pacific, will exceed the world average as their healthcare sectors expand, modernize and adopt formal wound infection prevention protocols. As a part of its Asia expansion, Cardinal Health acquired interventional cardiology product manufacturer Cordis, which provides a broader footprint for distribution of its products and services.
